Koh Phangan

The Only Koh Phangan Guide You’ll Ever Need

The Magic of Phangan

There’s just something about the rhythm of this island that gets under your skin if you give it enough time. I fell in love with Koh Phangan, and now I’m sharing why. Here is my curated collection of the island’s best-kept secrets, the cafes I lived in, the viewpoints that took my breath away, and the local spots that most tourists drive right past.

Where to stay

Most people’s first introduction to the island is the Thong Sala Pier. It’s hectic, loud, and usually where you’re frantically trying to figure out which taxi to grab. If you’ve done any research at all, you’ve probably heard of Haad Rin in the south. It’s famous for the Full Moon Party, and honestly, if you’re looking to dance on a beach with ten thousand people, that’s your spot.

But if you’re looking for the version of the island I fell in love with—the one with the incredible views, the best food, and that quiet “magic” everyone talks about—do yourself a favor and head in the complete opposite direction.

I spent most of my time up toward Chaloklum Bay. It’s a total 180 from the south. It’s a fishing village at heart, so it feels grounded and authentic. The pace is slower, the water is clearer, and the community there just feels right. It became my home base for the month, and I can’t imagine staying anywhere else.

Koh Phangan - The Bohemian & Party Haven

Vibe: Backpacking hub, bohemian, spiritual seekers, and famous for its legendary Full Moon Party.

Beaches & Activities: Haad Rin hosts the infamous Full Moon Party, but away from the crowds, Phangan offers serene beaches like Bottle Beach, Thong Nai Pan, and Salad Beach. Activities include yoga retreats, cooking classes, hiking to waterfalls, and exploring quiet coves.

Food & Nightlife: Eclectic food scene with many vegan/vegetarian options, healthy cafes, and local Thai eateries. Nightlife revolves around the Full Moon Party, but there are also smaller jungle parties, reggae bars, and relaxed beachfront lounges.

Best For: Backpackers, party-goers (especially around the Full Moon), yoga enthusiasts, and those seeking a more relaxed, bohemian atmosphere outside of party times.

Ko Tao - The Diver's Dream & Adventure Seeker's Paradise

Vibe: Laid-back, adventurous, dive-centric, and popular with budget travelers and those seeking outdoor activities.

Beaches & Activities: Known as one of the world’s most affordable places to get certified in diving, Koh Tao’s underwater world is its main draw. Stunning dive sites like Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock promise encounters with sharks, barracudas, and vibrant coral. Above water, enjoy snorkeling, rock climbing, hiking, paddleboarding, and relaxing on beaches like Sairee and Freedom Beach.

Food & Nightlife: A good mix of local Thai food, international cuisine (especially Western comfort food), and a crazy bar scene along Sairee Beach. It’s all about sunset drinks and chill vibes, raging parties like the Ko Tao Jungle Party (which is a must!), and home of the longest bar crawl in the world.

Best For: Divers (beginners and experienced alike), snorkelers, adventure seekers, rock climbers, and budget travelers who love the outdoors.
