Top Things to Do in Cairo Beyond the Pyramids

The Pyramids get all the hype — but Cairo has so much more.
Everyone goes to Cairo for the Pyramids (and you should too). But the city itself is where the real magic lives — ancient mosques, chaotic markets, hidden rooftops, and green spaces you'd never expect in a city this dense. These are the spots that made me fall in love with Cairo beyond the obvious.
The Egyptian Museum
One of the oldest and largest collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world — over 120,000 pieces crammed into a pink colonial building that feels like it hasn't changed in a century. This is where King Tut's gold death mask lives. The Royal Mummies room. Jewelry, sarcophagi, and statues dating back thousands of years.
It's overwhelming in the best way — you could spend 3 hours here and still miss things.
Tips:
• Go early morning (opens at 9am) to beat the tour bus crowds
• The Royal Mummies room is a separate ticket — worth it
• Skip the freelance "guides" outside (see my scam post)
• Allow 2-3 hours minimum

Lunch in Downtown Cairo after, then a walk along the Nile Corniche.
Khan el-Khalili Bazaar
Cairo's legendary 14th-century market — a maze of narrow alleyways packed with brass lanterns, spices, perfume oils, jewelry, leather goods, and everything in between. The sensory overload is unmatched. The smell of spices mixing with shisha smoke, the glitter of hundreds of handmade lanterns — it's chaotic and beautiful.
What to Buy
• Brass lanterns (start at 40% of asking price)
• Spices and hibiscus tea (karkade)
• Custom cartouche jewelry (your name in hieroglyphics)
• Perfume oils (oud, amber, musk)
Tips
• Go late afternoon/evening for best lighting and energy
• Eat at El Fishawy Cafe — open since 1773
• The deeper you go, the better the prices
• Keep phone in front pocket (crowded, not dangerous)

Al-Azhar Mosque is right next to it — combine into one afternoon/evening.
Al-Azhar Park
A 30-hectare green oasis in the middle of one of the most densely populated cities on Earth. Built on a former rubbish dump, it's now one of the most beautiful parks in the Middle East — manicured gardens, fountains, and panoramic views of Islamic Cairo's minarets.
After days of traffic, noise, and sensory overload, this park is a reset. You can actually breathe here. The views of the old city skyline — dozens of minarets silhouetted against sunset — are some of the best in Cairo.
When to go:
Around 4-5pm. Stay for sunset — the light over Islamic Cairo is insane. Bring a blanket and sit on the grass.
Eat here:
Lakeside Cafe inside the park — great food and views. Entry fee is very cheap.
Best paired with:
Khan el-Khalili is a 10-minute drive away — do the park at sunset then the market in the evening.
Rooftop Spots with Pyramid Views
A handful of rooftop restaurants and cafes near Giza where you can eat dinner or drink cocktails while staring at the Pyramids lit up at night. Peak Cairo luxury.
Khufu's Restaurant
Best for: Dinner at sunset
Unobstructed views of all three pyramids from the rooftop terrace. Egyptian and international food. Watching the Pyramids turn gold then get lit up by the sound and light show is surreal. Mid-range pricing. Book ahead — rooftop tables go fast.
9 Pyramids Lounge
Best for: Late-night drinks
Probably the most famous pyramid view on Instagram. Shisha, cocktails, chill late-night vibe. More lounge than restaurant — go for drinks after dinner elsewhere. Open late, popular on weekends so try a weeknight.
Marriott Mena House
Best for: Special occasion
The most luxurious option — a historic 5-star hotel at the foot of the Pyramids. The restaurant terrace looks directly at the Great Pyramid. Upscale pricing but worth it for a special night. Also has a pool with pyramid views.
Andrea El Haram
Best for: Affordable local food
More local, less touristy. Famous for grilled chicken and Egyptian comfort food. Outdoor garden seating with distant pyramid views. Way more affordable than the hotel options — great for lunch on a Pyramids day.
Pro tip for all rooftop spots:
Arrive 30-45 min before sunset. Most require reservations for rooftop tables — call ahead or message on Instagram. Dress smart casual.
Give Cairo More Than a Day
Cairo isn't just the Pyramids. It's the chaos of Khan el-Khalili at night. It's the unexpected peace of Al-Azhar Park at sunset. It's eating grilled chicken while the Pyramids glow behind you.
The city has layers — the more you explore beyond the obvious, the more you'll understand why people come back. Give yourself at least 4-5 days here. You need them.
