My Koh Phangan Guide: The Island That Has It All

Part full moon chaos, part spiritual haven, all paradise.
Most people's first introduction to Koh Phangan is the Thong Sala Pier. It's hectic, loud, and usually where you're frantically trying to figure out which taxi to grab. If you've done any research, you've probably heard of Haad Rin in the south — famous for the Full Moon Party, and if you're looking to dance on a beach with ten thousand people, that's your spot.
But if you're looking for the version of the island I fell in love with, the incredible views, the best food, and that quiet "magic" everyone talks about — do yourself a favor and head in the complete opposite direction.
I spent most of my time up toward Chaloklum Bay. It's a fishing village at heart, grounded and authentic. The pace is slower, the water is clearer, and the community just feels right. It became my home base for the month, and I can't imagine staying anywhere else.

Scooter rental
Koh Phangan is about 15km from tip to tip — small enough to scooter across in 30 minutes, but big enough to spend weeks discovering new spots. The south is party central (Haad Rin). The north and east coasts are where the magic lives — hidden beaches, wellness communities, and the best food.
You'll want a scooter. The roads are hilly and some are unpaved, but it's the only way to reach the good stuff. Rent from your hotel or a shop in Thong Sala — around 200-300 baht/day ($6-9).

The Highlights
Shivori Ecstatic Dance + Cacao Ceremony
My number one recommendation on this island. A cacao ceremony followed by free-form dance under the stars. If you have any spiritual curiosity at all, this will move you.
Bottle Beach Viewpoint
The best viewpoint on the island — arguably one of the best in all of Thailand. A jungle hike brings you to a panoramic lookout with pristine beach below.
Full Moon Party
You already know. Neon paint, fire dancers, bass shaking the sand. Go once — don't stay near Haad Rin. Stay north and tuk tuk in.
Muay Thai Class at Evolve Fitness
Even if you've never thrown a punch. Drop-in classes, great coaches, and the kind of workout that makes you feel alive. Then watch a real fight later that week.
Amsterdam Bar at Sunset
The sunset spot. Cold drink, feet up, watching the sky turn gold over the Gulf. This became my daily ritual and I miss it constantly.

Swim
The Beaches
Phangan has more beaches than you'll visit in a week. Some are only accessible by boat or hike — and those are the best ones.
Bottle Beach — hike-only access, pristine, feels like your own private bay
Zen Beach — rocky and raw. Famous for sunset drum circles.
Secret Beach — not on Google Maps. Ask around. Crystal water, almost no one there.
Sunrise Beach — face east, set an alarm for 5:30am, and watch the sky light up.
Eat
A Few Food Favorites
Maslow
Lunch spot with infinity pool access when you eat. Food is solid, pool overlooks the jungle. One of the coolest restaurant concepts I've ever experienced.
Koh Raham Restaurant
A beach bar you reach by boat or hike. Crystal water, swings over the sea, incredible seafood. One of the most beautiful settings on the island.
Dar Mansour
Moroccan kitchen where you order the night before because the meal cooks overnight. Completely unique and genuinely incredible food.
Saturday Night Market
Street food stalls, live music, local crafts. The energy of the whole island in one place. Go hungry — everything is cheap and good.

Party
The Nightlife
Full Moon gets all the press, but Phangan's real nightlife personality lives in the jungle clubs and beach bars that go off every other night of the month.
Eden — a club literally in the jungle. Trees around the dance floor, serious sound system, international crowd.
Half Moon Party — smaller than Full Moon, in the jungle, more underground. Arguably better production and crowd.
Amsterdam Bar — not a party, but the best sunset drinks on the island. Cold beer, golden sky, and the kind of evening that makes you never want to leave.

Where I Stayed
Amaya Hotel
Chaloklum area
Away from the Haad Rin madness, close to Chaloklum Bay. Clean, comfortable, well-priced, and surrounded by the version of Phangan I love. Would book again without thinking.
Where to stay tip:
The south (Haad Rin) is loud and party-focused. The north and west coasts are calmer, prettier, and closer to the best beaches and food. Stay north, tuk tuk to parties when you want them.
